Details of Cosby's Prison Life Reveal How Cushy Jail Is for Celebrity Sex Criminals

Share

As Bill Cosby begins to serve his sentence after being convicted of an atrocious sex crime, we have the opportunity to see just what his life will be like behind bars.

And the speculation is that the living conditions aren’t too bad for a man convicted of three counts of aggravated indecent assault.

His sentence is three to 10 years in a state prison for drugging and sexually assaulting the victim, Andrea Constand. The assault happened at his home 14 years ago.

Cosby’s new home is State Correctional Institution Phoenix, a state prison in Schwenksville, Pennsylvania.

While Cosby, 81, has not entered the general population as of yet, he does spend time with the prison staff and and receives daily calls from his wife, Camille, according to the celebrity website TMZ.

TMZ cited an interview with Cosby spokesman Andrew Wyatt.

“Since he’s not in general pop yet, he spends a lot of his time chatting with prison staff. Wyatt tells us Cosby has mentioned many times how respectful the staff is and how well they’ve treated him,” TMZ reported.

In September, The New York Times described the facilities in which Cosby will be spending at least the next three years.

Should Bill Cosby receive special treatment in prison?

“Most of the inmates in the 3,830-bed prison are doubled up in cells, but Mr. Cosby, now Inmate NN7687, was given his own, with no timeline yet of when he will join the general population,” The Times reported.

“Only lawyers and religious advisers will be allowed to visit Mr. Cosby for his first 10 days of incarceration, a standard practice, according to Amy Worden, the spokeswoman for the state Department of Corrections.”

Here’s a closer look of the SCI Phoenix prison from PennLive.com, the website of the Harrisburg Patriot-News.

This is high security prison with an elaborate fencing system that detects anyone who would try to climb, cut or break through the fence. A pathway between fences detects weight, should anyone walk near the area.

As you might, expect the facility is completely equipped with video security cameras, and it also has a separate room for religious services and facilities for exercise.

CNN also reported Cosby was fined $25,000 and ordered to pay the costs of prosecution as part of the sentence.

Judge Steven O’Neill “ruled that Cosby will be classified as a ‘sexually violent predator,’ a determination that requires lifetime registration, lifetime mandatory sex offender counseling with a treatment provider and notification to the community that a ‘sexually violent predator’ lives in the area,” according to CNN.

It is yet undetermined just how tough Cosby’s time in prison will be, but regardless of his age, he was convicted of a serious sexual assault crime.

If we are all to live in this nation of laws, there should be no celebrities on the cell block.
