2 Years After Carrie Fisher's Death, Billie Lourd Sings 'These Days' To Honor Late Mother
For those who love all things Star Wars, the 2016 Christmas holiday season was capped off by a heartbreaking tragedy. That’s because a beloved galactic princess was unexpectedly called home.
Actress Carrie Fisher was traveling aboard a cross-country flight from London to Los Angeles on Dec. 23, 2016. Prior to landing, she suffered a medical emergency.
Fisher was rushed to a hospital the moment the plane reached the gate. But four days later, on Dec. 27, the cherished lady who portrayed Princess Leia passed away.
At the time of her death, Fisher was 60 years old. According to People magazine, it was later determined that she’d undergone cardiac arrest.
Now, two years later, fans continue to mourn as they anticipate how the final 2019 Star Wars series installment will honor their adored princess. And Fisher’s daughter, “American Horror Story” actress Billie Lourd, is mourning right along with them.
In fact, due to a heartrending twist, 26-year-old Lourd actually has two tragic reasons to grieve. Fisher’s mother and Lourd’s grandmother, legendary actress Debbie Reynolds, passed away just one day after her famous daughter.
So recently, Lourd turned to music as a way to express her sorrow.
On the second anniversary of her mother’s passing, Lourd sat down at a polished grand piano. As reported by Access Online and other media outlets, she also shared a poignant video on her own Instagram account.
Lourd’s sweet nickname for Fisher was apparently “Momby,” a variation of “Mommy.” And Access Online confirms that this was indeed “Momby’s” piano.
The instrument was a gift from Fisher’s own father, renowned crooner Eddie Fisher. Lourd was determined that it should ring out with melodic grace notes as a tribute to her mother’s enduring spirit.
“It has been two years since my Momby’s death,” Lourd’s emotional Instagram post began, “and I still don’t know what the ‘right’ thing to do on a death anniversary is (I’m sure a lot of you feel the same way about your loved ones).”
So the “American Horror Story” actress explained that she’d decided to do something “a little vulnerable for me, but something we both loved to do together — sing.”
As her video illustrates, Lourd proceeded to play the affecting opening strains of the classic Jackson Brown ballad “These Days.” According to Lourd, it was one of her mom’s favorite songs.
Lourd then delivered the stirring lyrics in her own smoky, sensitive singing style. She also noted that it was important to heed the words and “keep on moving.”
“I’ve found that what keeps me moving is doing things that make me happy,” read her Instagram post. The talented entertainer added that she especially enjoys “working hard on the things that I’m passionate about, and surrounding myself with people I love and making them smile.”
Lourd concluded that her ultimate hope was to help encourage and motivate others feeling dejected or down. “As my Momby once said, ‘take your broken heart and turn it into art’ — whatever that art may be for you,” she said.
