47 Years After Woman Loses Her Ring, A Single Text Message Revealed Where It Was Hiding
Buried treasure? In a high school locker room?
It would appear so. Thanks to Doug Ludwick, the athletic director at Comstock High School in Kalamazoo, Michigan, one woman has been reunited with a prized possession she lost years ago.
Angelita Olivares, now Kolodzieyczyk, graduated from Comstock High School 47 years ago. She was a transfer student from Loy Norrix High School, finishing out her final year in a new school.
But before the transfer, Angelina purchased a class ring from Loy Norrix and carried it with her to her new alma mater. “Put it in my locker, never thought anything about it,” she recalled.
When she returned from gym class, however, she thought a whole lot about that ring. She couldn’t find it.
“It was gone,” Angelina said. “…To me it… meant a lot.”
She was heartbroken, and believed she’d never see the ring again. So it was truly unbelievable when Angelina received a text message informing her that the priceless item had been found.
But where had it been found? And why?
Turns out Ludwick had been taking down some old lockers at Comstock. As fate would have it, the ring simply fell from a locker onto the ground.
Shirley Doorlag, Ludwick’s administrative assistant, knew how it felt to lose something so special. When Ludwick showed her his discovery, Doorlag knew she had to act.
“We went through the archives,” she explained. “…went through all the yearbooks from ’68-’71. You felt like a detective.”
And their detective work paid off. Their search led them to Angelina, who still can’t believe she’s wearing the ring she lost all those years ago.
“I was like, ‘This can’t be real.’” Angelina said. “I mean it’s been 47 years.”
If rings could talk, I wonder what this one might say of all the locker room conversations it has heard over the decades. Thankfully, the right people at just the right time were able to return this treasure to its rightful owner.
