85-Year-Old Woman Chooses to Share 'Dream' with Family of Fallen Officer
When Martha Wolfe’s assisted living home told her that they were going to grant a wish for her, she knew exactly what to say.
Wellbrooke of Westfield, an assisted living home in Westfield, Indiana, has a program called “Live a Dream” that grants one special wish to their residents.
Jessica Strausbaugh said that when employees of Wellbrooke first approached Martha about her wish, she just kept saying, “I want to pay to forward. I want to do something special for someone else.”
Jessica even tried to convince her, “This is a time for you to be selfish. You can do whatever you want.”
Martha remained persistent. “She said, ‘No, I just want to make someone else’s dream come true.’ And we said, ‘Okay, let’s make someone else’s dream come true,'” Jessica said.
In fact, Martha already had the perfect family in mind.
After she heard about Jacob Pickett, a Boone County sheriff that was tragically killed while chasing a suspect on March 9, 2018, she decided that she wanted to help.
Wellbrooke contacted Pickett’s family and compiled a list of things that his wife and two sons could use.
Martha then spent about an hour buying things like toys, shoes, and clothes to be delivered to the family. She spent around $400.
“I have enjoyed it, and I hope they enjoy what we’ve bought,” she said.
She still plans to buy a few items online before the family receives all of the gifts.
When Martha was asked why she decided to selflessly use her wish to help the Pickett family, she simply said, “Just to be doing something for somebody else.”
