Scary NBA injury leaves player bloodied and damages the court

Share

Kris Dunn of the Chicago Bulls had a dunk that made all of the highlight reels Wednesday night.

But not for the reasons you might think.

The Bulls’ guard stole the ball from Golden State’s Klay Thompson and drove nearly the length of the court for a breakaway dunk in the fourth quarter of Wednesday’s game at the United Center in Chicago.

After dunking the ball, Dunn hung on the rim to try and steady himself before going back down to the floor. It’s a move you see dozens of times every night across the league, and one that usually ends without incident.

This was one of those rare times when things were anything but routine. Dunn lost his grip on the rim before he could slow his momentum and landed face first on the court.

Dunn, with his mouth bleeding, stayed on the floor for several minutes while trainers tended to him. He was able to walk to the team’s dressing room under his own power.

Following the game, the Bulls said Dunn “chipped and dislocated” two front teeth. He was also checked for a possible concussion.

Dunn’s teeth weren’t the only things damaged by his fall. A chunk of the court where Dunn landed also was in need of attention.

“I came (to the locker room) with him and he’s all good, coherent,” said Dunn’s teammate Zach LaVine. “He’s a really tough kid. Whenever he does something, I think he does it to the extreme. He did the (dislocated) finger, now the face.

“He left a little dent (on the court), which is crazy. He has some strong teeth, must be drinking milk.”

The Warriors won the game 119-112, and tied a franchise record with their 14th straight road victory.

Thompson scored a season-high 38 points and Steph Curry added 30.

Dunn played well up until his injury, finishing with 16 points. The loss snapped Chicago’s three-game winning streak.
