Johnny Manziel makes statement after XFL announcement, fans freak out

Share

That didn’t take long.

Not long after Vince McMahon announced the grand return of the XFL, slated for 2020, one of football’s most polarizing stars has spoken up about it.

Johnny Manziel, who last took an NFL snap in 2015, has been out of the sport after getting mired in numerous personal and legal issues.

Manziel had been dealing with alcohol problems and was also involved in a domestic violence incident in 2015. All charges from the 2015 incident were eventually dropped.

The personal demons plaguing the former Texas A&M star helped drive him off the Cleveland Browns roster and out of the NFL, and he has been in limbo ever since.

The Canadian Football League’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats have expressed interest in Manziel, though the two seem to be far apart in terms of a contract.

Manziel’s agent even gave the Tiger-Cats a deadline of Jan. 31 to come up with an acceptable contract for him.

It doesn’t seem either side is heading toward a timely resolution.

That may not matter.

Would you like to see Johnny Manziel in the XFL?

Shortly after the announcement of the XFL’s return, Manziel took to social media and raised a lot of eyebrows with his comments.

On Twitter, Manziel fueled speculation by directing his tweet at McMahon.

On Instagram, Manziel further stoked rumors about a “comeback” by using that exact word.

One possibly significant hurdle does exist for Manziel.

In McMahon’s introductory press conference, he alluded to the XFL’s zero-tolerance approach to players with criminal records.

As previously mentioned, Manziel has had his fair share of run-ins with the law.

McMahon didn’t specify exactly where the XFL will draw the line when it comes to criminality — for example, whether misdemeanors count against a prospective player.

If McMahon does enlist Manziel for the XFL, it could provide a huge spark for the upstart league.
