Gronkowski's one-word response to reports he will play next season triggers frenzy

For those of you looking for a definitive answer to Rob Gronkowski’s future in the NFL, don’t expect his recent tweet to offer any clues. Actually, expect quite the opposite.

On Wednesday, the New England Patriots tight end released a one-word tweet regarding his future in the league.

“#clueless,” Gronkowski wrote, further adding to the confusion surrounding his potential exit from the game.

While the hysteria caused by the cryptic message may have sent Patriots fans into a panic, the resulting host of memes and gifs was quite entertaining.

Do you think Gronkowski will play next year?

An extraordinary combination of size, strength, speed and a larger-than-life persona catapulted the man they call “Gronk” to superstardom.

However, that star was speculated to begin fizzling out after the 2017 season due to a laundry list of injuries that have hampered the tight end throughout his past five seasons in the NFL.

According to Sports Injury Predictor, Gronkowski has missed a total of 22 games over the last five seasons due to injuries ranging from ACL and MCL tears, concussions and back surgery.

And because of this, the injury aggregation website lists him as a medium-risk player when it comes to his proclivity to experience damage that keeps him off the field.

On top of this, Gronkowski isn’t someone who needs football to earn a living. His over-the-top personality has already solidified him offers in the entertainment industry and the WWE.

But while signs may have been looking gloomy for a Gronkowski return to the gridiron, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport provided a glimmer of hope for the New England faithful on Wednesday.

Rapoport announced that former University of Arizona standout was “expected to return” to the game, despite numerous rumors to the contrary.

“He did ponder retirement, he did discuss potentially moving to another venue — WWE for once — maybe Hollywood,” Rapoport claimed.

“But the belief now is those things will come after his football career,” he said, adding that Gronkowski would likely “continue his football career with the Patriots.”

As noted by Bleacher Report, Gronkowski still has two years and $17 million remaining on his contract with the Patriots.

It remains to be seen what path Gronkowski will choose, but it might be safe to say that we won’t truly know until the first game of the 2018 NFL preseason kicks off.
