LeBron James gives his definitive answer on joining the NFL
It’s never been up for debate that Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James is one of the best athletes in the entire NBA.
At six-foot-eight and roughly 250 pounds, the 33-year-old’s size, speed and overall athleticism have given him the ability to overpower whoever stands in his way and essentially do whatever he wants on the basketball court.
He’s such an amazing athlete that for years, people have wondered whether he might also be successful if he decided to try something new — namely, professional football.
With James set to be a free agent following the current NBA season, one NFL star — Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster — started a social media campaign for James to join the Steelers.
The Steelers wideout went all out on his recruiting pitch, even going so far as to photoshop James’ face onto a Steelers jersey.
Unfortunately for Smith-Schuster — though it’s probably good news for the Cavaliers — James stated definitively on Wednesday that he’s perfectly happy where he is, and won’t be switching sports anytime soon.
“Nah, I’m fine. I’m fine with my sport I got,” James told reporters. “It’s pretty funny, though. I seen some of the edits that they had of me in the Steelers uniform, but I like tank tops and shorts, I’m sorry. I’ve tried the shoulder pads, and it was fun while it lasted, but I’m a tank top and shorts guy.”
James has indeed “tried the shoulder pads.” In high school, he was a star football player, and was even offered a scholarship to play at Ohio State, according to ESPN.
Of course, James decided against football, and instead focused on basketball. The rest, as they say, is history.
If the four-time NBA MVP changes his mind, though, it’s likely that Smith-Schuster will be ready.
The Steelers wideout even suggested that the reason his team hasn’t given running back Le’Veon Bell a long-term contract extension is because they are saving cap space for James.
The irony wasn’t lost on Bell, who the Steelers recently put the franchise tag on for the second consecutive year.
For now, though, it seems as though James will stick to basketball. Aside from that, it’s unclear as to where he will end up. It’s possible he re-signs with the Cavaliers, but he’s expected to have many suitors willing to pay a pretty penny for his services.
