Breaking: NFL star Michael Bennett indicted by grand jury

Share

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive end Michael Bennett after he was indicted Friday for an incident that happened at Super Bowl LI in Houston.

A Harris County grand jury indicted Bennett for a “felony charge of injury of the elderly for allegedly injuring a 66-year-old paraplegic who was working at NRG Stadium to control access to the field at Super Bowl LI, prosecutors said,” according to KHOU.

Bennett was in Houston for last year’s game to watch his brother, tight end Martellus Bennett, play in the Super Bowl for the New England Patriots.

Prosecutors say that after the game ended, Bennett was trying to get onto the field to join his brother and other Patriots as they celebrated their victory.

But according to the district attorney, Bennett was told by the security team — which included the paraplegic 66-year-old woman — he had to use a different entrance.

That’s when Bennett allegedly pushed through the security members, including the 66-year-old, authorities said.

The charge, injury to the elderly, includes intentionally and knowingly causing bodily injury to a person 65 years or older. It carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

As a result of the indictment, a warrant has been issued for Bennett’s arrest. Prosecutors are working with Bennett’s counsel regarding his surrender.

Should Michael Bennett serve jail time for this offense?

Bennett, a 9-year NFL veteran who has spent the last 5 seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, was traded to Philadelphia last week.

He has been a regular protester during the national anthem for the past two seasons, usually sitting on the bench instead of standing during the song.

Bennett was detained by police in Las Vegas in August after reports of a random shooter. Bennett tried to run from the casino after police ordered everyone to the ground.

Bennett claimed police used excessive force when he was handcuffed, saying it was another example of racial profiling by police against African-Americans.

“Las Vegas officers singled me out and pointed their guns at me for doing nothing more than simply being a black man in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Bennett wrote on social media after the incident.

Las Vegas police union president Steve Grammas wrote to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and asked that Bennett be disciplined for making statements that were “false and defamatory” against the officers.
