MLB Star Gets Injured During Massage, Will Miss 4-6 Weeks
In the pantheon of bizarre sports injuries, the one that has sidelined Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa has to be considered among the strangest.
According to the shortstop himself, he fractured his rib by getting a massage.
“I’m extremely disappointed about not being on the field with my teammates,” Correa said in a statement Wednesday.
“I sustained the rib fracture during a massage at my home on Tuesday. To sustain an injury in such an unusual way makes it even more frustrating. However, I will work hard to get back on the field as quickly as possible to help our team achieve our goal of winning another championship.”

He was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday, but it’s expected that he’ll be out for four to six weeks.
“It’s a tough loss for us,” Astros manager AJ Hinch said, MLB.com reported.
“It’s certainly tough for him. There’s not much we can do about it now. He’s going on the IL. He’ll be gone for a significant period of time, and we’ll have to adjust as a team and play well in his absence.”
Correa had been having a good year, hitting .295 with 11 home runs and 35 runs batted in.
He joins several other key Astros, including outfielder George Springer and second baseman Jose Altuve, on the injured list.
Infielder Aledmys Diaz is also on the shelf.
Correa, Springer and Altuve will all likely be out for at least the next few weeks, meaning the Astros are going to need other players to step up.
“It’s going to be a challenging time for our club,” Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow said, according to MLB.com. “We have six or seven players right now who aren’t able to play, and that’s frustrating for the month of June. We had a great start to the season, but it’s going to challenge our depth, it’s going to challenge our ability to be creative and we’re going to have to keep playing well.”
“I think we can do it with the talent we have, but we’re going to have to explore all options, including potentially bring in help from the outside.”
While the players have access to team masseuses for massages, they are welcome to seek out their own treatments, Luhnow said, which Correa appears to have done.
He might want to find a new masseuse.

Meanwhile, the Astros are 37-20 and lead the American League West by 7.5 games over Oakland.
Houston will visit Oakland for a key three-game series starting Friday night.
