US Open Winner Turns Heads with Incredibly Patriotic Outfit, Gets Shoutout from Trump

Share

After Gary Woodland won the U.S. Open on Sunday, his performance and his patriotic outfit received plenty of attention — including from President Donald Trump.

Woodland earned his first major championship at Pebble Beach, shooting 13-under par. He fended off Brooks Koepka, winner of the 2017 and 2018 Opens, who finished 10-under.

He held up the trophy while wearing a Puma pullover with a red, white and blue logo.

The image, which combines a folded American flag and eagle wings, is the logo for Volition America, an organization that works with Puma Golf to sell merchandise and use the proceeds to benefit the families of fallen and wounded U.S. soldiers.

Puma and Volition America have worked together since 2017, according to the Golf Content Network.

Specifically, the two organizations work to raise funds for the Folds of Honor Foundation, a nonprofit that raises funds to help pay for higher education for military families.

Did you appreciate Woodland's patriotic attire?

The Folds of Honor Twitter account was pleased with Woodland’s victory over the weekend.

“CHAMPION Congratulations @GaryWoodland on your first major title victory!” it said. “Incredibly proud and grateful for your continued support. Shop Gary’s @VolitionAmerica apparel at our online store. All proceeds benefit Folds of Honor! http://store.foldsofhonor.org. #USOpen.”

Out on the course, Woodland wore Puma shoes featuring stars and stripes.

Woodland’s strong outing received praise from the president himself.

Clearly happy with the Kansas native’s respect for the military and the American flag, Trump tweeted, “Congratulations to Gary Woodland in winning the United States Open Golf Championship. Fantastic playing, great heart – there will be more in Gary’s future!”

As the president noted, Woodland could have more success in the future. The 35-year-old still has plenty of years left in his career and is one of the best long-ball hitters on the PGA Tour; he had a 450-yard drive at Kapalua in 2012.

Woodland deserves credit for representing the United States and its military in a respectful manner during his highly successful weekend at the U.S. Open.

He showed his love and respect for the country and helped the families of fallen and disabled military members.

Woodland surely is creating many fans with the way he carries himself.
