Video: Rob Gronkowski Appears To Say 'Yeah, I'm Coming Back' to Drew Brees

Rob Gronkowski has added more fuel to the speculation that his retirement from the NFL will be very short-lived.

It happened with a comment the former New England Patriots tight end made Wednesday night on the red carpet for the ESPY awards.

Gronkowski was talking to New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees when the camera caught him appearing to say, “That’s what I’m hoping for,” and then, “Yeah, I’m coming back.”

He then laughed, which could mean either he wasn’t serious about coming back or his retirement itself is a joke.

Adding to the intrigue was Captain Obvious hanging out in the background with a stoic demeanor.

Gronk’s remark certainly had people talking and speculating, with a variety of interpretations on what he said.

For all we know, Gronkowski could have been referring to the ESPYs and telling Brees that he plans on coming back to the event next year.

He’s spent the last nine offseasons training and preparing for the upcoming season at this time of the year, so now that he finally has some free time on his hands, perhaps the ESPYs will be an annual event for him.

This likely would be a nonstory if Gronkowski’s actions leading up to his comment didn’t point to a possible return to football.

On Monday, he fanned the flames for a potential return by playing catch with Tom Brady on UCLA’s campus. It was a private workout with both players in town at the same time, and Gronk indicated that it benefitted Brady more so than himself.

“It was great working out,” Gronkowski told TMZ Sports. “Tom needs someone to throw to so, you know, he calls Mr. Reliable Robbie G, the one and only! Woo!”

One would think that the Patriots would welcome back Gronkowski with open arms even if he wanted to return midseason. He averaged 14.5 yards per reception last season, second in the NFL among tight ends with at least 40 receptions.

Meanwhile, the Patriots’ projected starting tight end is Benjamin Watson, who will turn 39 this season and also had a short-lived retirement this offseason.
