4-Year-Old Brother Sings 'Remember Me' on Birthday of Little Sister That Died
There is no standard way to process the death of a loved one. Everybody handles grief differently, each in his or her own time.
At just 4 years old, a little boy from San Antonio is learning to process the death of his baby sister, who was born with a kidney condition called hydronephrosis.
Little Ava Lynn sadly passed away in May 2017, when she was just 4 months old.
On the anniversary of what would have been Ava’s first birthday, her brother, Alexander picked up his toy guitar.
He began to strum and sing the lyrics to “Remember Me,” from Disney’s latest film, “Coco.”
“Remember me,” Alexander sang, gazing at Ava’s framed photo. “Though I have to travel far.”
The boy didn’t know he was being filmed as he continued singing. “For even if I’m far away, I hold you in my heart.”

Alexander’s parents, Samir and Stephanie Deais shared the video on Twitter. “He’s only 4 years old and he understands,” Samir wrote.
The sweet serenade has captured the hearts of people around the globe. Alexander’s dad was floored by the heartfelt reactions from complete strangers, calling it “nothing short of beautiful.”
The film “Coco” has been instrumental in helping Alexander cope with the loss of his baby sister, his father said.
The film is based on the Mexican holiday Día de los Muertos — also known as the Day of the Dead.
“I couldn’t be more thankful for the movie,” Samir said. “It’s made it so easy to understand for him and for us to explain to him in a beautiful way.”
The past year hasn’t been easy on the Deais family, but Alexander is a definite bright spot.
The family told San Antonio Express they are expecting a third child in 2018, a baby girl they’ve named Stella Grace.
“All this ugly in the world and these kinds of things make it still seem beautiful in the dark times,” Samir said of his son’s song.
“All these blessings for our small family make us very humbled and thankful and blessed.”
