8-Year-Old Boy Once Homeless Surprised with His 1st Ever Bed, Can't Stop Crying
What do most kids you know put on their Christmas list? One of the newest technological marvels? A dog? A pony?
Christmas is a time of asking for those out-of-the-ordinary items that are generally out of reach. But what about when the thing a child dreams of getting for Christmas is a bed to call their own?
A mother and son from Detroit have been living mostly in homeless shelters for the past eight years. This meant that 8-year-old Daeyrs has never experienced the comfort of truly being at home.
His mom, Dionna, had lost her job as a trainee nurse. Losing her job led to the loss of their housing.
Homelessness often leads to a loss of dignity as well. State housing did become available, so Dionna and Daeyrs moved in.
It didn’t quite feel like home, though. The rooms were almost completely bare.
They only had a few chairs and a blowup mattress. Humble Design was contacted by the family’s social worker.
The purpose of Humble Design, according to their website, is to restore “dignity to every family that has suffered through homelessness.”
Their vision for how they accomplish that restoration is generous and affirming.
“We will use donated household goods to transform empty, cold houses for the recently homeless, into warm, welcoming and uplifting homes, that lead to successful lives.”
That’s exactly what they did for Dionna and Daeyrs. Humble Design decorated and furnished the house so that it really would feel like home.
The young boy was sleeping on the floor in blankets. Finally, he would get his own bed, which is something most of us likely take for granted.
Daeyrs had never had his own bed before. His reaction to seeing his own room is both heartwarming and humbling.
His room filled with a bed, sports-themed decorations, toys, chairs, and even an art set looks completely appropriate for an 8-year-old boy. For Daeyrs, it didn’t just mean an age-appropriate furnished room.
According to Humble Design, it meant having “a place to stay and just be a normal kid with no worries.” When he opened his eyes to the bedroom reveal, he put his hands over his mouth.
He burst into tears and cried, clearly touched by the bedroom transformation.
I have a feeling the transformation from Humble Design helped the family to not only transform their home but their lives with the comfort of knowing they have a more functional and cozy space to call home.
