Barber Tells Client to Grow Beard During Weight Loss Journey, New Look Lands Modeling Contract
First off, a disclaimer of sorts is potentially in order. Each of us would probably love to believe that our entire life could be transformed by one magical ingredient: perhaps it’s that perfectly distressed pair of boyfriend jeans, a professional tooth whitening, or even a bottle of conditioner.
But the truth is, in most cases our earthly existence won’t magically transform with a single masterstroke. Unless, that is, you happen to be Gwilym Pugh.
Back in 2007, the now-33-year-old Welshman used to look pretty darn inconspicuous.
He sported close-cropped ginger hair and a pair of glasses; and he worked from a spare bedroom operating a life insurance company he himself founded at the age of 21.
But you know how it is — even when you have a brilliant mind for business, sitting there all day at a desk can lead to unintentional snack attacks.
Pugh thus progressively put on weight, and a knee injury prevented him from playing sports to drop some poundage.
So as a way to get more active, the young entrepreneur decided to start a folk band called the Magic Rooster Brothers.
Pugh told news outlets that the musical act was actually a joint venture with his friend, Calum Ross.
Pugh also decided to stop sitting at a desk all day, while getting more intentional about walking and eating mindfully.
According to media sources, he’s stated that he began aiming for an average of roughly 15,000 steps every day.
And then during a routine conversation, Pugh’s barber Joel made a fateful suggestion that basically changed everything. “He told me if I was playing the guitar in a folk band, I had to have a beard,” explained Pugh.
The advice was taken to heart. Then, as the weight gradually came off and the beard gradually came in, Pugh made one more game-changing decision.
Simply put, he joined Instagram as a way to expand his band’s profile. “It was there that I was spotted, and shortly after chosen, to be the face of Nathan Palmer’s 2015 collection,” said Pugh.

Long story short, the former businessman is now a top model working with recognized brands across the globe. They include Belstaff, Vans, Diesel, Bud Light — even David Beckham’s male grooming brand, House 99.
The humble redhead has described all this global attention as giving him “a massive boost in confidence.”
Gwilym Pugh, if you’re reading this, the world would just like to thank you for giving us a massive boost of hope and inspiration.
