Carrie Underwood Gives Cop $10,000. Turns Out The Two Have A History
Celebrities don’t always seem like regular people, do they? The sheen of media coverage and their obvious talents so often lend them an otherworldly air, at least to my eyes.
That’s why it’s so refreshing to see the example of someone like Carrie Underwood. The Grammy and CMA winner rose to fame by winning the fourth season of “American Idol” in 2005.
The crooner of top hits such as “Jesus, Take the Wheel” and “Before He Cheats” got some coverage last year for a freak facial accident that require 50 stitches to fix.
But more recently, she’s ended up in the press for entirely altruistic reasons.
The story started on Feb. 11, 2018, in her hometown of Checotah, Oklahoma, and the person who is centered on was one Checotah Assistant Police Chief Justin Durrett. While on his way to work, Durrett lost control of his vehicle.
Unfortunately, he wasn’t wearing his seatbelt, and when his truck crashed, he was thrown from it.
And then the worst happened: The vehicle landed on top of him.
Deputy Misty Johnson of the Haskell County Sheriff’s Office just happened to be driving the same route and found Durrett. He had been laying there unconscious for nearly an hour.
A GoFundMe page set up to solicit funds for his medical treatment revealed that Durrett suffered from a broken neck and that surgeons had to staple his scalp.
Though he lacked any feeling from the chest down due to a bruised spinal column, physicians were watching and waiting for improvement.
As of press time, the campaign had raised $17,430 for Durrett — $10,000 of which came from someone named Carrie Fisher.
It wasn’t long before someone realized that Fisher is Underwood’s married name and that she had given the incredibly generous donation.
“It was shocking, but it wasn’t shocking,” Haskell County Sheriff Tim Turner said to Inside Edition. “Carrie is a good girl, a good lady, and she’s a blessing to our community.”
Underwood was motivated by more than just blind generosity, though. She and Durrett had a history together, having been in the same third-grade class.
This isn’t the first time that Underwood has given back to Checotah. Her past charitable works include providing scholarships to local students and donating to parks.
“She gives back to anyone she’s able to give back to,” Turner stated. “Carrie’s been very generous with our community.”
