Ex-Husband Attacks Mom of Four in Home, 5-Yr-Old Runs for Gun & Saves Her Life

Share

When we normally think about children and guns, we often expect stories with tragic endings.

Surprisingly enough, though, there are plenty of news stories out there in which kids not only avoid injuring themselves or others with firearms, they also save their parents’ lives.

In 2015, Rachael Moore of Queensland, Australia, thought her life was about to finish in the worst way possible. Her former partner Daryl Fields had shown up drunk at her house and shot her with a shotgun.

But as he reloaded, three of Fields’ five children swarmed him, striking him on the head and wrapping their arms around his throat. Two got the gun away while the third spirited her mother to safety.

A then-11-year-old from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, took more direct measures in 2014. Jayda Milsap had only just learned how to operate a firearm when she was called upon to use it.

Her mother, Brandy Moreno, had recently gotten a protective order against her former boyfriend, Leo Henry. Fearing he might return, she’d taught her daughter how to use a gun.

So when Henry appeared in the middle of the night and stabbed her mother, Milsap shot him. Henry fled and was soon captured by police.

Yet it isn’t just older children who sometimes save their parents’ lives. Sometimes youngsters in their single digits turn into tiny heroes.

Just consider the horrible case of Derek Martin. On June 14, the Houston, Texas, man broke into the home where his ex-wife lived with her four children ranging in ages from one to eight.

Though his wife had a protection order against him, that didn’t stop Martin from attacking her. As the children watched, he seized her by the throat and began to choke her.

That was when the two oldest kids decided to fight back. An 8-year-old girl started hitting him as hard as she could.

Meanwhile, the family’s 5-year-old raced through the house, only to return with something for Martin’s ex-wife: a gun. She proceeded to shoot him in the arm, which saved her life and led to his arrest.

While not every incident with a gun ends so positively, it’s good to remember that firearms can save lives as well as take them.
