Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, Makes History: 1st Royal Member To Be Nominated for Teen Choice Award

Share

While I’d bet that most Americans find the British monarchy fascinating, I’d also wager that it also seems a bit inscrutable to us. After all, the closest we come to royalty is athletes and movie stars, captains of industry and politicians — and too often their behavior seems more common than we’d like to admit.

But Meghan Markle’s transformation from Hollywood actress to regal fixture has been swift and complete.

Well, perhaps not totally complete, because the Duchess of Sussex just got nominated for a somewhat surprising award. The annual Teen Choice Awards have placed her in the running for Choice Style Icon.

This isn’t the first time Markle has gotten a nod for her professional achievements.

Thanks to her work on the USA Network’s “Suits,” her name has been put forward for consideration for an Emmy, although we won’t know if she cinches the nomination until July 12.

However, no royal has ever gotten nominated for a Teen Choice Award, meaning Meghan has notched another first for Buckingham Palace. The competition looks stiff, though.

Other nominees include Blake Lively, Harry Styles, and Zendaya. However, voting is open to the public, so if you think the Duchess of Sussex should win, fill out your ballot!

Not all of Markle’s new honors combine so naturally with her acting experience. Queen Elizabeth II recently passed a new responsibility on to her.

The Duchess of Sussex will become patron of the Queen’s Young Leaders, a position created by Queen Elizabeth five years ago. It serves as a way of honoring exceptional youth from the British Commonwealth.

Those included will have impacted their communities for the good in various ways, including saving lives, dealing with mental health issues, and helping curb domestic violence.

In fact, Markle’s role will prove challenging enough that she’s expected to need six months of training to prepare for it.

But even as her official responsibilities pile on, the Duchess of Sussex has shown that she still has a very practical side. Royal watchers have noticed that she often appears at official events in shoes a size or two too large.
