Burn Victim Finds Strength Through Music in Hospital As She Faces Painful Recovery
We’ve all experienced a painful burn or injury at some point in our lives. I know there were times after major surgery when I broke down into tears, wondering if I had the strength to continue toward recovery.
It’s a very moving and uplifting thing to see someone who, despite painful circumstances, chooses to uphold a positive outlook.
Markeyla Williams of Auburn, Alabama, is only 22 years old, and has already suffered more pain than most of us can imagine.
On May 20, 2018, Williams’ day began like any other. Her mom had sprayed oil in her hair, but when Williams ran to her car for a brush, things took a turn for the worst.
“I… was talking with my cousin outside of my home when I flipped a lighter and caught my hair on fire,” she said. At the time, the young woman believed she wouldn’t live to see another day.
But Williams did survive. A helicopter flight and a month at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital have taught her just how strong she really is.
Unfortunately, the road to recovery is a long one, and physical therapy is excruciating. It’s Williams’ faith in God, and her love for music, that have helped get her through it all.
Though Williams has suffered severe burns and lost all of her hair, she hasn’t lost her beautiful smile. Nicole Camp, a music therapist at UAB, has helped Williams by bringing her the light of music during this darker time.
“Markeyla was always joyful even in her painful circumstance,” Chad Tidwell, an occupational therapy student, commented. What a beautiful testimony!
Watch as she sings and undergoes treatment without complaint. Her joy is infectious.
“Everybody has just been so sweet to me,” Williams said in a video on Facebook, speaking of the hospital staff at UAB. She also talked about God, explaining how he’s helped her in this trying time.
“If God just survived me from that, the least I can do is to keep my head up high,” she said. Wow.
Our prayers are with Williams and her loved ones. No doubt her positive attitude will continue to bless everyone around her.
