Watch Incredible Moment Three-Legged Dachshund Named Ringo Comes In 1st Place
When the weekend rolls around, what could be better for a dog lover than a sunny afternoon outdoors with your pooch by your side?
Well, you could be eating donuts while your snack-loving dog searches for dropped popcorn bits and colored donut sprinkles on the ground.
Throw in some fantastic Wiener dog races, and the two of you might just be bursting with enough happiness to hold you over for days to come.
On the final Saturday in July, the Canterbury Park racetrack in Minnesota invited dog and donut lovers to enjoy a day of eating, sniffing, and cheering on the doggie race competitors.
An impressive 72 Wiener dogs participated in the races, which happened in between the day’s horse races. The dogs lined up on the track to the noise of clapping, adoring fans and an excited race announcer.
A crowd favorite was a Dachshund named Ringo, an inspiring pup with just three legs.
The race wasn’t Ringo’s first — according to his owner, Megan McDonough, Ringo participated in the races last year and emerged as the champion.
This year, Ringo participated in the sixth heat of the races. He came out ready to run, sporting a blue shirt-costume cape thing with the number 3 on the side.
Ringo lined up alongside the competitors, and the race began.
The announcer described the beginning of the race as somewhat “erratic,” as some dogs ran in circles, ran sideways across the dirt track, and stopped near a pink plastic kiddie pool because, well, squirrel.
But Ringo remained focused on the finish line, and was soon just seconds behind the leader of the pack. All eyes were on the 3-legged pup as he sprinted to the end.
In dramatic fashion, Ringo ran right past the leader to assume the first place position.
His puppy eyes were on the puppy prize (maybe a donut?) as he crossed the colored flag finish line.
“Ringo!” the crowd screamed. “One of the greatest stories in the history of this racetrack!” boomed the enthusiastic race announcer.
The Dachshund’s win has brought smiles to faces around the country, and inspired other pet owners to get outdoors and get active with their own pets.
Ringo fans are excited for the 3-legged champion to return to the track on Sept. 3, where he will compete in the championship round.
