Woman with Cerebral Palsy Rejected at Salon, Walmart Cashier Steps in & Saves the Day
Random acts of kindness happen every day. A bus driver helps a patron across the street, or a group of police officers show up to a birthday party.
These acts are often sights unseen. But it’s always good to take time to recognize those who make a difference in our communities.
Even if the impact seems small at the time, it can inspire and encourage others to reach out too, which, in the end, will make a much greater impact.
Walmart doesn’t seem like a place where someone’s life would be changed for the better. Then again, life-changing moments often happen where you’d least suspect.
Take the Walmart in Burton, Michigan, for example. It was a typical day for cashier Ebony Harris. That is, until she witnessed something that led her to take action into her own hands.
Literally. Angela Peters has cerebral palsy. The condition causes her hands to shake. Because of this, the staff at the Walmart salon, DaVi Nails, turned her away.
That’s when Harris stepped in. She approached Peters and offered to do her nails during her break. The two then chose some colors together and sat inside the Walmart Subway restaurant.
“I just wanted to make her day special,” Harris told ABC 12. “I didn’t really want her day to be ruined. That’s why I did it. And plus she’s a sweetie.”
Of course, Harris is quite the “sweetie” too. Her kind act didn’t go unnoticed. Subway employee Tasia Smith captured Harris in the act and shared what soon became a viral post on Facebook.
Smith wrote about Harris in the caption, telling followers that Harris was “so patient with” Peters. Smith even noted that Peters “barely moved” while Harris gave her the manicure.
Although what happened to Peters wasn’t right and probably embarrassing, the ladies aren’t speaking poorly of the salon.
“We’re not trying to make them lose customers,” Harris shared with ABC 12. “But maybe spread awareness that no matter the person, who they are, what color they are, disability, whatever, they’re people too.”
Peters also posted her feelings on Facebook. “I forgive the nail people for not doing my nails…” she wrote. “Walmart has never treated me wrong… I just want people educated.”
Peters, Smith and Harris shared that they plan to remain friends. “I told her she’s a blessing to us,” Harris said of Peters.
But Harris and Smith are blessings as well. Harris for her kind act and Smith for sharing it with others and raising awareness. Well done, ladies. We need more kind souls like you in the world.
