Steve Martin Stood Up and Left 30 Seconds into This 1978 Johnny Carson Interview

For decades, actor and comedian Steve Martin has tickled our funny bones and made us laugh until we cried.

We probably all have our favorite Steve Martin moments. Mine usually involve the actor with his long-time friend and co-star Martin Short.

Netflix featured the duo in “An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life” — a one-time, one-night act that had fans’ sides splitting and ears buzzing over the pair finally performing together again.

Rolling Stone said the special’s “baggy, unhurried charm proves to be one of its chief attributes.” It was cute and quirky, for sure, but not Martin’s funniest performance by a long shot.

I have personally always favored these two in the “Father of the Bride” films. Their chemistry on (and off) screen is undeniable.

My favorite moment comes from the first “Father of the Bride.” I can’t help but fall into a fit of laughter every time George Banks loses it over the hot dog bun dilemma.

Do you remember this moment from 1978?

Of course, there’s plenty of other Martin moments to love, as he’s given us golden performances throughout the years, starring alongside favorites like Goldie Hawn and Bonnie Hunt.

He’s our favorite dad and husband, always bringing light and laughter to even the most serious scenes. The man has been interviewed by every night time talk show personality from Johnny Carson to David Letterman.

In fact, a 1978 interview with Johnny Carson proves how Martin’s sense of humor has stood the test of time.

Though the moment is 40 years old, it’s just as funny today as it was back then. According to Biography.com, Martin had just starred in “The Absent-Minded Waiter” a year prior to his interview with Carson.

The film was not only his first, but one he wrote as well. It also landed him an Academy Award nomination for Best Short film in 1978.

From the beginning, Martin has stolen the show, and his first interview with Carson was no exception.

Watch what happens 30 seconds in:

When he returns crying and says, “I don’t have to leave,” I almost lost it. His confidence, even as a newbie actor, is inspiring.

There he was, appearing with the King of Late Night, and Martin didn’t even bat an eye. My favorite part was when Carson pretended to comfort him by holding his hand.

Yes, there’s no denying Martin is a king of comedy. I certainly hope he plans to take on another starring role soon. We need a good, classic comedy to grace the silver screen once more.
