Mother Covered in Black and Blue Bruises After Shielding Infant from Hail Storm
Natural disasters seem to be battering the globe from more than one angle. In the United States, Hurricane Michael has caused destruction across Florida’s panhandle.
Australia has also seen its unfair share of severe weather lately. The Project reported that Queensland has been hit “with cyclone-strength winds, freak hailstorms, and a tornado.”
Thousands have reportedly been affected by these storms. Now one mother is sharing her horrifying encounter with a hailstorm.
Fiona Simpson was driving with her grandmother and daughter — just four months old. The trio ended up trapped in the storm with no way to find shelter.
All the 23-year-old woman could do was pull over and hope for the best. That’s when the unthinkable happened.
“I heard this loud bang,” she told ABC Brisbane. “And the car is just cold and wet and it’s just all blowing in.”
The mother went on to describe how she hopped into the back seat in an attempt to shield her baby daughter while she was still in her car seat.
Things went from bad to worse and soon even that wasn’t enough to protect the child. Another window blew out and Simpson’s 78-year-old grandmother was being hit in the front seat.
“I pulled my daughter out of the car seat and pushed her into the front,” Simpson explained. “I grabbed my daughter off my grandmother and put her on the floor.”
Simpson recalled how she could see her daughter screaming, but the wind was so loud she couldn’t hear it.
With her daughter in the safest and most shielded spot on the floor of the car, Simpson then attempted to also shield her grandmother from the hail.
“It was so scary but there was no time to be afraid… It just all happened so fast,” she told ABC Brisbane.
When the storm finally passed, nearby residents called emergency responders. Simpson’s daughter came away with some bumps, but the 23-year-old and her grandmother sustained serious damage to their bodies.
Both women were badly bruised and the grandmother had to stay overnight at the hospital due to severe damage to the skin on her right arm.
As for Simpson, she explained she wouldn’t think twice before protecting her daughter again. “I’m just a mum,” she told the Australian news outlet. “You do anything you can to protect your child no matter what, even at your own expense and I would do it again.”
This woman is a true hero any parent could relate to. We’re so glad she and her family are safe and wish her and her grandmother a quick recovery.
