After Debate, Political Rivals Stun Everyone By Playing Unexpected Duet
We’ve seen a lot of strange things on social media. We’ve also witnessed a lot of hate, negativity and just plain meanness.
Friendships end and people walk away no better off than they were before. Everyone thinks they’re right, but the way some folks go about discussing their views is all wrong.
Whichever side you support, whether it be left, right, or somewhere in between, nothing will ever be resolved through hate.
Many reading this might relate to feelings of hopelessness or discouragement over what we’ve seen take place in politics, particularly in recent years.
I’m not talking about which candidates won or lost. To be honest, the biggest disappointment stems from watching fellow Americans — fellow humans — treat each other so poorly over a difference of opinions.
Which is why it’s so uplifting to see two political candidates, though on completely different sides of the road, come together and make a statement of unity.
Lamoille County, Vermont, boasts a small population of just over 25,000. And yet, it’s in this quaint county where a spark of change for the better occurred this election season.
Zac Mayo and Lucy Rogers are both campaigning for a state House seat. Mayo is a Republican and Rogers is a Democrat.
Rogers shared with CBS News that her main focus is healthcare. Mayo, on the other hand, expressed he feels “we don’t need as much government.”
Both candidates have journeyed throughout the county, knocking on doors and introducing themselves to voters.
But what’s standing out to voters isn’t necessarily Mayo’s or Roger’s willingness to go door-to-door, or even where they stand on certain issues.
What’s really caught everyone’s attention is what took place following a debate between the two at the local library.
“It gave me a lot of hope,” a resident told CBS News. Once you watch this video, you’ll understand why. These candidates may just give you hope too.
Their duet and togetherness are inspiring. I certainly got goosebumps watching. Their choice to sing “Society” by Eddie Vedder was perfect.
The lyrics speak of greed and the chains that come with constantly wanting more than you have. “It’s always been a personal favorite of mine,” Mayo told Seven Days. “It’s always resonated with me.”
According to Seven Days, the candidates connected on the 4th of July over their love for music, but it wasn’t until a few days before the debate that Rogers proposed the idea of a duet.
“It strikes a chord,” Mayo said to CBS News. “To say to the world that this is a better way.”
Their message is truly heartwarming and serves as a good reminder that, win or lose, everything boils down to serving and caring for the American people.
There will never come a day when every American agrees with one another. But there’s one thing we can agree on: kindness always wins.
I think Alexander the Great said it best — “Whatever possession we gain by our sword cannot be sure or lasting. But the love gained by kindness and moderation is certain and durable.”
