Selena Gomez Points Fans Who Are Struggling to Christian Artist Lauren Daigle
There’s been quite a bit of crossover with Christian music lately. While in the past artists who were open about their faith may have been rejected or criticized, now you might hear a worship song on a mainstream radio station.
Christian singer Austin French released his debut album in September, which was welcomed with open arms by the Christian community.
He even earned some attention from the mainstream media. French was named Fox Sports Channel’s artist of the month in September.
The crossover potential for French’s songs is appropriate considering he told The Billy Hallowell Podcast he’d once vowed to never become a Christian.
In fact, it is French’s desire to reach the hurting and the scarred — normal people just like him — that led him to ultimately turn to Christ.
There’s quite a bit of stigma around brokenness in the church, but that’s slowly being turned around as more celebrities come forward in vulnerable and authentic ways.
Selena Gomez‘s battle with depression and anxiety is no secret. The Disney Channel starlet-turned-pop-sensation has made it a point to be real with her fans.
In October, TMZ reported Gomez suffered from an “emotional breakdown” following her recent hospitalization.
“Depression and anxiety was the forefront of everything I did in my life,” Gomez said in an Instagram live video.
The singer has been open about her faith in Jesus and shared about it in another Instagram live video. In this video, she also pointed her followers to listen to Lauren Daigle, currently the number one Christian artist in the United States.
Gomez shared that many followers had asked her about anxiety and depression. Her response was Daigle’s song, “This Girl.”
The lyrics speak of trying to run from God and realizing he was there all along. “My heart is yours,” the song says.
“I like to listen to worship music…” Gomez explained in the video. “Here’s the song I feel like I get to sing to Jesus.”
What an inspiration and an encouragement to so many who might be afraid to talk about their struggles with mental health.
Daigle’s second album “Look Up Child” was number 3 on the Billboard 200 in September, Billboard noted. Daigle shared she ‘s been amazed at the response. Her Christian songs have been played on secular radio stations everywhere.
“It’s crazy, ’cause I feel like [the crossover] is naturally happening…” she told Billboard. “I’m watching it evolve before my eyes.”
Her inspirational Christian song “You Say” is currently holding the number 1 spot on multiple Billboard Christian music charts.
