Jeff Bridges Shares Love Story of 41-Year Marriage to Longtime Wife Susan Geston
Lasting love seems rare these days. It’s a beautiful thing when a marriage stands the test of time, and the many struggles this life can bring.
Especially in Hollywood, where weddings can often seem more for show than anything, inspiration is found when a couple in the spotlight makes it work.
Jeff Bridges and his wife Susan Geston are one such couple. The pair is a true testament to love and commitment.
“I can’t let this woman go,” Bridges shared in a 2015 interview with OWN. He described Geston as being like a diamond in the sand.
When he got down on his knees and proposed, Geston said, “Okay, when?” Bridges’ response was priceless — “How about Thursday?” he asked.
That was over 41 years ago now, and the couple continues to thrive. Though the actor admitted there was once a time when he feared words like “’til death do us part,” that was all behind him after meeting Geston in 1975.
It took some time, but Bridges shared with Reader’s Digest in 2006 all about his journey to marrying Geston. He even gave her credit for his acting work.
“I’m the guy who makes the buck,” he wrote, “but she’s the one who takes care of everything else. I really am more in love with her than ever.”
He wrote these words over a decade ago, but not much has changed in more recent years. “It was love at first sight,” he told Jimmy Kimmel in 2017.
Bridges continues to laugh at his long ago cold feet. The joy on his face any time he mentions his beautiful wife is enough to make even the biggest skeptic believe that marriage can last a lifetime.
When asked by the Associated Press about how to get past the problems all couples face, Bridges opened up about his relationship with his wife.
“This is a bump,” he said. “Now let’s see if our love can grow to embrace this bump… the bump can serve to create more intimacy between us.”
Inspiring words from a successful man who isn’t afraid to work through the tough stuff. Come June 2019, the husband and wife will head into their 42nd year of matrimony, with no signs of slowing down.
In the end, their secret appears to be all about sticking with it despite hard times. “If you change partners every time it gets tough or you get a little dissatisfied, then you don’t get the richness that’s available in a long-term relationship,” he said, according to The Daily Beast.
“My wife supports me and it makes me love her more.” And it makes us love this couple even more, too! We wish them many more years of love and happiness together.
