What do criminals rely on most in order to secure their misbegotten gains? You might be tempted to say strength or violence or guns.
In truth, though, it’s none of those. A criminal makes his gain through surprise.
It makes sense when you think about it. Even Jesus said, “If the master of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have left his house to be broken into.”
Fortunately, not every bad guy gets the drop on his victims. Everyday citizens have shown remarkable ingenuity when dealing with bad guys.
For instance, in October 2018, a store owner in Belgium got robbed by a band of thieves. KGO-TV reported that as they stripped him of cash, he put into plan a cunning scheme that sounds crazy on its face.
He told the robbers that he would have more cash later in the day, so they should come back then. They fell for it, and when they returned, the police were waiting for them.
“It’s like a comedy,” the owner said. “They’re being called the worst robbers in Belgium.”
According to Fox News, a would-be bank robber in Ohio got nabbed thanks to the quick thinking of a teller. When 51-year-old David Menser walked into a Columbus, Ohio, bank and demanded cash, the employee gave it to him.
But Menser also said that he wanted money from the lobby ATM. The teller said that he’d need to provide a driver’s license to get funds from the machine — and Menser quickly provided it.
He realized his strategic error soon enough and fled. However, the license provided police with enough info to arrest him.
Detective Brad Thomas with the Columbus Division of Police said, “This is rare, but not unheard of. I’ve seen it a couple of other times.”
LADbible recently leased footage of another potential robbery victim who used his brain to get out of trouble. A video shot on New Year’s Day shows a man walking along a lonely road at night.
He glances over as a car pulls up beside him, and something in their demeanor lets him know that they intend to take his belongings. So he promptly turns around and beats it in the opposite direction.
But the thieves put their vehicle in reverse and roar up behind him. Then the man turns on a dime, sprints across the street, and continues running — running toward an oncoming car.
The robbers track him, then realizing their mistake, swerve back into their lane. But by then, the pedestrian has doubled back and darted around the block, hiding from the ne’er-do-wells and proving that your mind truly is your best weapon.
