As Wife Prepares To Say Goodbye to Husband in Hospital, Mother Drops Bombshell About Sister

Share

“You learn that God truly carries you when you cannot walk yourself.” These are words written by a woman who has experienced so much heartbreak and sorrow, faith would seem impossible in her circumstances.

But for Angela Mencl, faith was all she had after tragedy struck her and her family within an extremely short period of time.

“My world turned upside down with one phone call,” she wrote on Love What Matters. “My healthy, 39-year-old husband called me from work … when he felt ‘off.’”

Mencl’s story is gut-wrenching, so be prepared. This one is tough to hear.

“After hours in the ER the doctor met me in the hall with tears in her eyes … ‘He has a tear in his aorta. It is catastrophic.’”

Mencl’s husband was rushed into surgery. “They wheeled Gary out,” she wrote. “Little did I know that that was the last time I would see my husband conscious.”

As the mom of four waited for news on her husband’s condition, more terrible news came her way.

“My mom showed up and she was hysterical,” Mencl said. “She immediately pulled me out into the hall and said, ‘Your sister died last night.’”

Though heartbroken for the second time that day, a small sense of relief came with the horrible news. “I thought now that my sister is gone, there was no way God would take my husband too.”

But Gary Mencl was on life support with no brain activity. He would not wake up. He would not be able to breathe on his own. It was time to say goodbye.

“The image of those final moments with my children and their Dad will never leave me,” Mencl said. “It was the most heart wrenching part of this whole experience.”

This woman lost her sister and her husband on the same day. How does one find the will to move forward after experiencing such grief?

Mencl explained how she found light amidst the darkness. “I have survived because of the kindness and selflessness of friends, family, church members, and complete strangers.”

“I don’t know why my husband and sister had to die,” she concluded. “All I can do is have trust that God is here with me and is molding me to be the woman he knows that I can be. “

It is the promise she made to her husband that keeps her going in the end — “I promised I would keep going even when I felt like it was impossible.”

Beautiful and inspiring, Mencl is a true testament to what it means to fight the good fight and keep the faith. We’re grateful she shared her story and hope it will resonate with others who have experienced a similar loss.
