How Hundreds of Women Are Using Their Mascara Wands To Help Save Wildlife
There are plenty of ways to donate your time and money toward saving or protecting wildlife. But I’ll bet there’s one thing you may not have realized you could be doing to help animals in need.
Do you use mascara? Or do you know someone who uses mascara? Chances are you fall into one of these categories, which means you have a quick and easy way to help.
Little did you know that those old mascara wands can be used (once cleaned, of course) to help care for and rehabilitate wild animals.
According to NBC News, it’s a good idea to discard old mascara tubes 2 to 4 months after opening. This is to prevent bacteria, mold and even yeast from harming the very sensitive eye area.
Rather than tossing those out-of-date germ-magnets, you can take a few easy steps to clean and sanitize them before shipping them off to organizations that use these little beauties every day.
“These wands help with the medical care & cleaning of wild life animals,” Lacie Paige Cole wrote on Facebook. “They can be used for everything from oil spills, to mites, to wound area cleaning.”
Cole suggests sending the tubes to Wildlife Wands at P.O. Box 1586, Southwick, MA 01077. According to the Wildlife Wands Facebook page, you don’t even have to clean them beforehand.
“I will accept the full tube or just the wands,” a post reads. “The tubes themselves I place in my recycle bin … My method is dish soap, bleach and scrub with cheap toothbrushes to get all mascara residue off. Then I take Clorox wipes to the handles and make sure each wand is presentable.”
The person behind this cause then sends the wands to different organizations, such as the Appalachian Wildlife Refuge in North Carolina, who need them.
Appalachian Wildlife Refuge also has its own wand recycling program recommendation. Wands for Wildlife holds an ongoing “Wandraiser.”
This particular program asks that you do clean the wands before mailing them to P.O. Box 1211, Skyland, NC 28776.
For more information and specifics on this program, visit their website. However and wherever you choose to donate your old wands, you can rest assured they’ll go to a good cause.
