Man with Stage 4 Cancer Will Spend His Final Days Traveling with Wife After Winning Lottery
Have you ever wondered what you would do if you won the lottery? I bet that most of us have, and I bet that most of us have also pondered the ways in which we would spend our winnings.
Perhaps you’ve envisioned creating your own business or maybe you’ve thought about building a beach-front villa in Tahiti.
But did you ever consider that you might use those funds to do something that someone else wanted? Well, a lotto winner from North Carolina has done just that.
Richard Beare of Charlotte, North Carolina, got the winnings of a lifetime in mid-March, according to WSET.
Sadly, those winnings will likely last longer than the rest of his days.
See, Beare was recently diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer.
Beare rarely played the lottery, NC Education Lottery reported.
“I only stopped because my wife asked me to get a Powerball ticket since the jackpot was so high,” he said.
So he dropped by a Charlotte-area QuikTrip and bought four tickets.
“The fourth one was the winner,” he said. “When I saw that I had matching numbers, I asked her, ‘What does it mean if I match the numbers?’
“She said it meant I won a prize. I told her, ‘Well, I guess we just won $250,000 then.’
“She was in shock and just kept looking back and forth to me and the ticket.”
Despite the good news, Beare explained that he felt nervous carrying around the ticket.
Although he didn’t win the grand prize, Beare’s winnings totaled $250,000.
After taxes, he ended up with $176,876. That left everyone wondering what he would do with the money.
Knowing his time was limited, Beare decided to use the funds to do something his wife had always wanted.
“I want to travel while I can still enjoy myself,” he said.
“My wife has always wanted to go to Italy, since that’s where her descendants are from. Now I can take her.”
