Firefighter Who Saved Dog from Dying in Sinkhole Takes Her Home Forever, Names Her 'Lucky'
The local fire department in Amarillo, Texas, was called in to help a Labrador-heeler mix called “Gracie Lou” who was trapped in a sinkhole.
The rescue was no small feat and took an hour of teamwork and determination. They even had to call in another station’s crew to help, firefighter Matthew Calvin told KAMR-TV.
Calvin said she was a “tough little dog” and Amarillo Animal Management and Welfare called the pup “a miracle,” KAMR reported.
“It was about 20 to 23 feet deep, filling up with water,” Calvin told KFDA. He called the rescue “intense” and said the crew had to eventually use a rope and ladder to get the dog out.
But Calvin’s heroism didn’t stop there. He didn’t just want to get “Gracie Lou” out of a sinkhole and into a shelter. He hoped to give her a permanent home.
“If she doesn’t have an owner, then I’ll take her in,” Calvin told KFDA. “I don’t currently have a dog right now, so we’ll make her a home. We’ll give her a home at our house.”
Since the dog didn’t have a locator chip, there was a good chance Calvin’s wish would come true. Still, he had to wait to see if an owner might come forward.
In the end, the required 72-hour waiting period passed and the only one coming forward to claim the lab-mix was the firefighter who saved her.
In a heartwarming tweet, Amarillo Fire Department shared an update on the pup along with some picture perfect photos of the dog and her new owner.
“We are happy to report that Lucky has found a home!!! ” the department wrote. “FF Matt Calvin adopted her this morning.”
