After 2-Year-Old Survives Being Shot in the Face, Community Steps Up To Support Mom
One community in Blackman Township in Michigan is helping out a mother whose son survived being shot in the face.
Michael Christopher Glance allegedly shot 2-year-old Ryker Glance as the toddler sat in a car seat in his mother’s car on April 16, according to MLive.
Nicole McCarthy refused to leave her son’s side during the 27 days he was the hospital. Miraculously, little Ryker survived.
Glance is currently being held in the Jackson County Jail with a $10 million bond.
As McCarthy found herself subsumed with Ryker’s care, seeing the boy through numerous procedures with eight different surgical teams, the wider community stepped up to help.
Family friend John Hays started a GoFundMe campaign for Ryker’s support.
The initial goal was $10,000, but after $80,000 in donations rolled in, Hays upped it to $100,000.
“The most important piece in all of this is that the whole community wants to help,” he told People.
“There are 160,000 people in Jackson County and if it was up to them, I’m pretty adamant you would have 160,000 people up at the hospital.”
Art Moehn Auto Group also stepped up, offering McCarthy a three-year lease on a new Chevrolet Equinox free of charge. The mother will use the car to take Ryker to see his doctors.
“We wanted to help the family but were not sure how at first,” sales consultant Jerry Cox said.
“I reached out to [Hays] about helping out, talked with my manager, and we worked out the details to give her a lease on a new SUV to help her take Ryker to all his appointments.”

“I can’t say thank you enough for what everyone has been doing for Ryker,” McCarthy said.
She added, “He’s my little warrior. If he can get through this, I can get through anything.”
