Woman Travels Entire Country Seeking Random Acts of Kindness in Honor of Late Mother
Mary Latham is just a girl with a Subaru and a camera, driving through the United States with a mission of seeking out stories of human kindness.
Her life may not be ordinary, as she drives from city to city sleeping in host homes, but Latham is on a journey inspired by her late mother, who told her daughter that kindness was everywhere — if only Latham would learn to look for it.
Latham was brokenhearted after the death of her mother in 2013, a dark season that eventually gave birth to Latham’s road trip project, “More Good.”
Latham clung to some encouraging advice from her mother, words that would inspire the next chapter of her own life after her mother’s death.
“There is always going to be horrible and tragic things that happen,” Latham’s mother had said, according to the More Good website, “but there will always be more good out there, you just have to look for it.”
Starting in October of 2016, Latham decided to take her mother’s advice and start looking for the good out there.
She packed up her mother’s blue Subaru and headed out on the road, and she has been traveling ever since.
As she travels, the 31-year-old sits down with her host families and hears their stories and the stories of those nearby, according to WBUR-FM. She plans to compile all these stories into a book.
Once the book is completed, Latham wants to donate copies to hospital waiting rooms, where they will likely fall into the hands of people who could use a little hope.
Latham relies on donations to pay for gas and minimal needs and chooses where to stay based on host invitations.
She does not have a formal sponsor; instead, she is fueled by human kindness.
Latham has been to nearly 40 states so far, and regularly updates her followers on her whereabouts through social media and her GoFundMe page.
She hopes to spread a message that even during hard times, the kindness of humanity will shine brighter than tragedy.
