Man Shares Video of Student Nurse Singing 'Amazing Grace' at His Grandmother's Bedside
Kindness and compassion are part of a universal language. They apply to all races, cultures, ages and occupations.
It doesn’t matter if you are a sitting in a high-rise office on Wall Street or flipping burgers at your local fast food joint; you are never in the wrong place or time to take a moment to spread some love.
Brittany McArthur, a 21-year-old nursing student from Northern Ireland understands this universal language quite well.
When her patient Nellie started singing a favorite hymn, McArthur — who just so happens to be a trained singer — joined in.
“We were talking about music because I always get asked do I sing because my name is Brittany (people always link it to Britney Spears),” McArthur told Liftable, a section of The Western Journal.
“We got talking about what songs we knew and Nellie sang first then asked me to sing so we sang ‘Amazing Grace‘ together as it was one we both knew well,” she added.
The sweet moment was captured on video by Colleen Willis and shared by Nellie’s grandson, councillor Jason Barr.
“How amazing is this,” Barr wrote on Facebook. “A young nurse Brittany McArthur came into my Granny in Altnagelvin Hospital this morning and sang to her. One of my Granny’s favourite songs.”
Watch as McArthur and Nellie sing this tune together. You might just get chills — this is so incredibly beautiful!
McArthur told Liftable she hadn’t known Nellie long and had only met her on the day the video was taken.
However, this isn’t McArthur’s first time singing to a patient.
“I have sang to many of my patients before and after the video!” she told Liftable. “I’ve actually lost count at how many!”
Her kindness is being praised by Western Health and Social Care Trust. McArthur was called a “social media singing sensation.”
WHSCT also noted on Facebook that the sweet moment “[highlighted] the compassion and care a nurse has for their patient.”
McArthur is due to finish her three-year BSc Nursing course in August. She admitted she has been shocked by the response the video has received.
“The response has been crazy!” she told Liftable. “The video has reached Canada and America and that seems crazy considering I’m only a little person from little Northern Ireland!”
“Everyone has been so kind and really positive,” she added. “I’m just good it was a happy news story!”
