38-Year-Old DIY Network 'Nashville Flipped' Star's Cause of Death Revealed
On April 28, 2019, Troy Dean Shafer passed away. Shafer was only 38. He hosted DIY Network’s “Nashville Flipped” — a reality show featuring the renovations of historic homes in Tennessee.
Two full seasons of the show have aired since its debut in 2016, PEOPLE reported. The cause of Shafer’s death was not released at the time of his passing.
Shafer is survived by his wife Becky, who also starred on the show. His passing was unexpected and sudden, but a newly released toxicity report has confirmed the contractor and aspiring music star’s cause of death.
PEOPLE reported that Erie County Coroner’s Office confirmed Shafer’s passing was “due to combined drug toxicity.” No specifics were given.
A statement released by DIY following Shafer’s death expressed the network’s “deepest condolences to Troy’s family and friends during this difficult time.”
Shafer was born August 18, 1980, according to his obituary originally published by Erie Times-News. He was a man of faith and loved music and golfing.
When “Nashville Flipped” began, Shafer expressed the feeling was “surreal” in an interview with WKBW-TV.
“Every morning I still think, ‘How in the world did this happen?'” Shafer admitted in the 2017 interview. “Cuz I was, you know, I was very content just renovating old houses without a show.”
While Shafer’s love for renovation put him in the spotlight, his passion for music never faded. According to the TV star’s bio on DIY, he originally moved to the country music capital to pursue a career underneath a much different spotlight.
Shafer can be seen singing with Becky on his YouTube channel in 2013. Their “carpool karaoke” style performance of “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now” holds new meaning in the wake of Shafer’s sudden passing.
In an interview with TMZ, Shafer’s brother Tim explained the 38-year-old “died in his sleep.” The family was not aware of any medical issues for the famous contractor.
Even with the cause of Shafer’s death made public, the overdose has been reported as “accidental.” The funeral was a private affair.
Rest in peace, Troy Dean Shafer. Please keep this man’s grieving family and friends in your prayers at this time.
