Mom of 4 with 'Incurable' Cancer Bursts into Tears When Boyfriend Proposes at Hospital Bedside

Share

Is there a proposal video in existence that doesn’t make you cry? If your answer is “yes,” then you haven’t seen Peter Potts’ proposal to long-time girlfriend Ashley Meehan.

In December of 2018, Meehan won her battle against cervical cancer. Everything was looking quite merry and bright for the 30-year-old mom of 4 and stepmom of 1.

But then the pains began. “Due to the radiotherapy Ashley had undergone, she started getting horrific pains at the beginning of this year,” her GoFundMe page reads.

Meehan was told at that time that “the treatment had damaged her [bowels] and that this unfortunately would not be able to be fixed.”

Even with all the pain she was experiencing, Meehan was simply glad to be cancer-free. But soon the pain in her bladder and legs became more than she could handle.

In April 2019, the cancer survivor visited her doctor. According to the Daily Record, Meehan was reportedly sent home from Clydebank Health Centre with pain medications such as morphine.

Her pain continued and she was hardly able to walk. Meehan knew something wasn’t right. Even with her cancer history, Meehan was allegedly not given further testing or scans.

Do proposal videos make you cry?

She went to the emergency room at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow twice.

When she finally went for a second opinion at Glasgow’s Beatson Cancer Charity Centre, the devastating diagnosis was given.

Meehan’s cancer was back. “It’s so devastating,” her boyfriend, 39-year-old Peter Potts, told Daily Record.

“When we got the second diagnosis, we were shocked but still a bit positive because Ashley had got over cancer before. But then we were told it was extremely unlikely that she could be cured.”

Meehan and Potts have been side-by-side for 12 years. Potts has been a stay-at-home dad, caring for Meehan and the children.

Potts made it clear in his interview with Daily Record that they don’t want to place blame for the cancer not being caught sooner.

The pair does, however, want to “make every day count,” Potts said. Which is why he had a very special surprise for Meehan when she was in the hospital recently.

With the help of 1-year-old Zara, Potts got down on one knee and asked Meehan to marry him. Zara wore a top with the words “Mummy will you marry Daddy” on it. The sweet moment was captured on video and Meehan was brought to tears.

“Love at first sight,” the caption on Facebook reads. “Forever and even longer.”  Don’t pretend you’re not about to reach for those tissues!

It’s almost impossible not to tear up as this heartwarming memory shows what true love looks like — for better or for worse. In sickness and in health.

“She [Meehan] really does have a heart of gold and would help anyone if she could,” the GoFundMe page explains.

Please keep this sweet family in your prayers. To learn more about Meehan’s diagnosis or to reach out, please visit their GoFundMe page.
