Watch: Armed Mother of 3 Makes Home Invader Pay - 'Something Just Came Over Me'
A brave, armed mother in South Carolina shot a home invader on Thursday morning to defend her three children.
Anderson County resident Ashley Jones heard a man banging on her front door at 6 a.m., according to WHNS-TV.
That’s an awfully early time to be banging on someone’s door. Jones didn’t see anybody from the window, so she asked who was there. Nobody answered her.
Next, Jones did what any reasonable mother would do: she called 911 and grabbed her gun.
When she walked downstairs after retrieving her gun, she saw a strange man knocking on her window.
Jones played it patiently and told the man that she’s armed and is willing to defend herself.
“I yelled, ‘I have a gun, I will shoot you, get away from my house,'” Jones said.
The man, who was with another person, wasn’t put back by her threat, as he went to the back of the house to check the backdoor with his companion. They also checked the garage before returning to the front door.
That’s when the altercation reached its breaking point.
The man kicked down the door, and Jones pulled the trigger. Footage of the incident shows that the man appeared to be hit and ran off.
“Something just came over me, and I got calm. My heart slowed down and I got focused. I told myself if he comes in here, you can’t let him get past your doorstep. You have three young children to protect,” Jones said.
A gun is the ultimate tool for self-defense and for leveling the playing field against attackers.
“If I didn’t have a weapon, I wouldn’t have been able to fight him off,” Jones said.
It would be difficult for most women to overpower two people, especially if one of them has a weapon of their own.
Jones said that she was initially hesitant to become a gun owner, but now knows she made the right decision.
Anderson County Sheriff Chad McBride said that Jones was prepared and did what she should have done.
The sheriff also said that both people in the surveillance footage are facing charges.
