Watch: Trump Shuts Acosta Down by Pointing to Angel Moms: 'Ask These Incredible Women'

Share

President Donald Trump shut down CNN reporter Jim Acosta’s question about the border crisis by pointing to angel moms as proof.

At a White House news conference on Friday, the president announced his decision to declare a national emergency to build the border wall after the recently passed spending bill failed to adequately fund the wall.

Trump also took questions — even from the snarky Acosta.

“What do you say to your critics who say that you are creating a national emergency, that you’re concocting a national emergency here in order to get your wall?” Acosta asked.

“I’ll ask the angel moms,” Trump replied before turning to the angel moms. “What do you think, do you think I’m creating something?”

Then Trump spoke directly to Acosta, slamming him as “fake news.”

“Ask these incredible women who lost their daughters and their sons,” Trump added. “Because your question is a very political question. Because you have an agenda, you’re CNN, you’re fake news.”

Trump’s reply was perfect because angel moms are proof that the border crisis is very real.

Was Acosta's question disrespectful to angel moms?

It was incredibly disrespectful for Acosta to imply that the border crisis is “created” when he was sitting only a few feet from families who have lost loved ones because of the border crisis.

While Trump’s reply to Acosta was perfect, the recently passed omnibus bill was not.

A national emergency to address the border crisis wouldn’t have been necessary if the spending bill was sufficient in funding the wall.

Not only did the spending bill only allocate $1.375 billion for “pedestrian fencing,” but it also included provisions that will deter border security going forward.

The fencing can only be built in a 55-mile zone and local elected officials, who are often left-leaning, have to agree on where it is built.

Additionally, the spending bill offers more protections for illegal immigrants, as noted by Mark Krikorian, the director of the Center for Immigration Studies.

The only option left for Trump after the lackluster spending bill passed was to declare a national emergency to build the rest of the wall, but there is still uncertainty surrounding that plan.

Even still, a national emergency won’t erase the crippling provisions included in the omnibus bill.

It’s good that Trump shut down Acosta and stood up for angel moms, but hopefully it’s not too little, too late.
