Age 2 Girl with Cancer Takes Special Trip to Farm To Meet Her Favorite Animal
My daughter, who is in her single digits, has found a show that she absolutely loves, namely Netflix’s “Spirit Riding Free.” In it, a plucky tomboy tames a wild stallion and goes on all kinds of adventures.
Naturally, my little girl has since fallen in love with horses, so my wife and I took her to a small farm nearby. The look on her face as she beheld those massive animals has forever printed itself on my memory.
Another girl had a dream to meet her favorite animal. The critter she wanted to see also lives on a farm, and she was introduced to it through another kids’ TV show.
According to a GoFundMe campaign, a 2-year-old girl named Autumn loves everything you’d expect for a girl her age. She likes singing and acting bossy, but she most enjoys the Nick Jr. show “Peppa Pig.”
Though Autumn had even taken on an English accent to mirror Peppa, she had a surprising secret: She’d never before seen a real-life pig.
In March, the little girl developed some breathing trouble and went to the hospital. What her parents imagined to be a simple virus soon turned into something far worse.
Doctors noticed her adenoids had grown unusually large and prepared to remove them. However, an otorhinolaryngologist noticed that Autumn had an unexpected growth extending behind her nose, and a CT scan revealed the real cause of her illness: cancer.
That set off a flurry of consultations, scans and procedures. Both of Autumn’s parents temporarily relocated to Children’s Nation Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
However, they didn’t forget their daughter’s passions or her love for “Peppa Pig.” They decided to give her an experience she wouldn’t soon forget with the help of an animal sanctuary who reached out when it heard Autumn’s story.
Sinclair Broadcast Group reported that Autumn took a trip to Peaceful Fields Sanctuary on April 11. No ordinary farm, Peaceful Fields prides itself on its bucolic environs.
According to the farm’s website, the sanctuary doesn’t function the way you might expect. Rather than focusing on marketing its products, it serves as a retirement home for hurting animals.
“The sanctuary was founded to provide a happy and healthy forever home for farmed animals in need,” the site reads. And there are more than a few critters there.
On its Facebook page, you find goats, cows, chickens, horses and sheep. And, yes, there are also pigs, which Autumn got to enjoy.
Footage posted to the TeamAutumn Facebook page shows a tentative Autumn approaching a big, bristly, porcine beast. Autumn skirts the giant pig, arm outstretched, obviously nervous.
Soon enough, though, she gets used to the snuffling beast. She gets a treat and feeds the big, old pig.
