Alyssa Milano Begins To See Smollett Likely Fooled Her & She's on the Warpath
The alleged “racist, homophobic” attack against “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett has begun to appear more and more like a hoax.
Some on the left, like this writer for The Washington Post, wanted it to be true because it would cause “irreparable damage” to the black and gay communities if it were a hoax — never mind the damage such a story, if true, would do to President Donald Trump, his supporters and the country as a whole.
But there is something else happening on the left and actress Alyssa Milano has provided a good example of it. Milano has been a regular and outspoken critic of Trump and his supporters.
While some others have taken the “wish it was true” route on the Smollett case, Milano got angry. She expressed how upset she would be if her fellow actor actually did attempt to deceive everyone.
WARNING: The image below is linked to the tweet that contains the word written in full. Some viewers might find the language offensive.
“If that man staged his own attack, he is wrong in so many ways,” Milano wrote.
“No one could be that hurtful? To stage this? Right?
“To f—- with all of us by playing into our weaknesses & make it even harder for victims to come forward?! No one could choose to be that hurtful? Right?! RIGHT?”
Milano’s points are valid. She began by stating how “wrong in so many ways” it would be if Smollett “staged his own attack.”
She then went on to briefly outline why this was true. She noted how it would be a case of him playing into “our weaknesses.”
She added that such a hoax would “make it even harder for victims to come forward.” Fresh on the heels of the Covington Catholic case comes the increasingly more likely Jussie Smollet Hoax. It would be more difficult for anyone to automatically “believe the victim” after this, as the left declares is of utmost importance.
But not everyone is on the “harder for victims” bandwagon. Some have criticized Milano and others making that claim.
For the critics, there is something insidious being missed here. And that is the implied hatred and bigotry against Trump supporters.
One Twitter user summed it up by arguing that when liberals say claims like Smollett only hurt future victims, they are ignoring the implicit attacks on Trump and his supporters that the false claims represent in the first place.
I see a lot more people saying “How could Smollett do this, he’s hurting minorities & LGBT folk with this hoax”.
The very sordid implication is that if we could assure that only Trump supporters were lied about, slandered, and harmed, then the hoax would be merely an cute prank.— PoliMath (@politicalmath) February 19, 2019
While that is also a valid point, the one made by Milano and others about victims is one that should not be dismssed lightly. Fake rape claims make it more difficult for rape victims to be believed or even feel like they will be believed.
With so many hoax hate crimes making headlines (The Daily Caller has a useful list here), the risk is that actual victims will find themselves in the exact same situation. And that is something everyone should be concerned about.
But there is something else to consider here and it could be a positive. If liberals like Milano and others can finally wake up to the fact that false reports have happened repeatedly since Trump’s election, and are wrong on so many levels, maybe those same liberals will also wake up to the mainstream media’s complicity in it.
If that happens, then she and others on the left may begin to question more of what the media says and be a little slower to engage in knee-jerk reactions to every story that comes out.
That would be a win for everyone — except for purveyors of “fake news.”
So maybe rather than attack and criticize, now is a prime opportunity to jump on the glimmer of light and encourage those on the left showing it to keep going down that path.
Maybe liberals won’t change, but if there is a chance that they can be helped to see the light, isn’t it worth the effort to try?
