Another Ex-Cowboys Star Hints at Possible Return After Witten 'Inspired' Him

With Jason Witten returning to the Cowboys, is the band getting back together in Dallas?

Not quite. Don’t expect to see Tony Romo and Dez Bryant back on the field at AT&T Stadium this season.

But another former Cowboys star did hint at unretiring and returning to the NFL after hearing that Witten is trading in his “Monday Night Football” microphone for a pair of shoulder pads.

DeMarcus Ware, the team’s all-time leader in sacks, posted a video on social media in which he said he was “inspired” by Witten’s return and was thinking about doing the same.

“Hey, I want to let everyone know that I’ve been inspired when I heard that Jason Witten might be coming out of retirement,” Ware said. “And I started thinking to myself, maybe I need to call Romo and get him out of the booth, and all three of us come back.

“But then Von Miller started hitting me up, and then also DeMarcus Lawrence, saying that they wanted another guy on the edge. Will I come back?

“I have been working out. And I do feel good. Do y’all think I should come back? Y’all let me know. Don’t play with me. Y’all let me know.”

It’s hard to tell if Ware is being serious or just joking around as he does have a smile on his face throughout the video.

Just like Witten and Romo, Ware also went into broadcasting in retirement — he’s an analyst for the NFL Network.

Ware turns 37 in July but is a couple of months younger than Witten, who turns 37 in May. The nine-time Pro Bowler played nine seasons in Dallas before being released prior to the 2014 season.

Ware then went to Denver, where he teamed with Von Miller and won the only Super Bowl of his career.

He retired after an injury-plagued 2016 season in which he had surgery on both his elbow and his back.

After hearing from Cowboys fans essentially begging him to come back, Ware again teased returning while also dropping an LL Cool J verse.

Ware also has worked as a pass-rush consultant for the Broncos, but Denver appears set on edge rushers with Miller, who 14.5 sacks last season, tied for fourth in the league, and Bradley Chubb, who had 12 sacks as a rookie.

But the Cowboys could use some help in terms of pass-rushers with DeMarcus Lawrence entering free agency and both David Irving and Randy Gregory facing suspensions.

If Ware does return, he will be the second-oldest defensive lineman or linebacker in the NFL next season and is just six months younger than the Miami Dolphins’ Cameron Wake.
