Beloved Actor Who Played 'Bozo the Clown' Passes Away at Age 89
One of my strongest childhood memories revolves around visiting my grandmother, who actually had cable television (we did not) and watching “Bozo’s Circus.”
I dreamed about being on the show some day and getting to march with him as a winner. The bucket game was always my favorite.
So when news broke that one of the actor’s who played the beloved character over the years had passed away, my heart broke.
Frank Avruch passed away on Tuesday at the age of 89 from heart disease.
He was a longtime Boston television personality and entertainer.
Most notably known for playing Bozo the Clown from 1959 to 1970.
For those unfamiliar, Bozo was a clown character that began in popularity in the 1960s.
The show, over the years, was known by various names such as “Bozo’s Circus,” “The Bozo Show,” “The Bozo Super Sunday Show,” and even went on to become an animated series.
Manager Stuart Hersh told The Associated Press that Avruch “touched so many people with his portrayal.”
Avruch was a contributor to WCVB in Boston for more than 40 years as a host of “Man About Town” and “The Great Entertainment.”
He was known as the “Boston Man.” Avruch was also an active philanthropist and a board member of UNICEF’S New England chapter.
He is survived by his wife Betty, two sons Matthew and Steven, and several grandchildren.
Thank you, Frank, for all the years of laughter, smiles, and dreams.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.
