Charles Barkley has the right take on LeBron free agency - 'I'm not gonna let this dude hijack my life'
One of the most infuriating byproducts of a 24-hour sports news cycle is that it’s always starving for content.
That leads to interminable storylines emerging to fill otherwise slow news cycles.
Take, for example, the hullabaloo over LeBron James’ potential free agency.
Yes, it’ll likely have massive ramifications on the immediate future of the NBA.
But as of now, there’s nothing but conjecture and theorizing out there. Free agency doesn’t even begin until July 1.
James also has until June 29 to make a decision on whether to opt out of his current contract, and it’s highly likely that he will use every last second before deciding.
It’s fruitless to obsess over something that can’t and won’t take place for a while.
And yet the futility in contemplating James’ next decision hasn’t stopped a wave of the most asinine and superfluous sports stories from flooding the internet.

There was a report that James doesn’t like the city of Houston.
There are reports about rumors that LeBron’s son is committed to a school in California and that his wife was spotted looking at schools in Los Angeles.
It’s all pointless. And one NBA legend concurs.
Charles Barkley went on “The Mike Missanelli Show” on WPEN-FM to share his thoughts on James’ pending free agency, and he didn’t mince words.
“I’m not gonna let this dude hijack my life,” Barkley said per NBC Sports Philadelphia. “The whole sports world, we sit around like idiots and worry about where this dude is going.”
Ironically, Barkley still ended up discussing James’ free agency plans, albeit he was more sure of what James would not do.
“He’s not coming to the [Philadelphia 76ers],” Barkley said. “He’s not coming to the Sixers because he needs the ball, [Ben] Simmons needs the ball and [Joel] Embiid needs the ball. That would make Simmons useless.”
Barkley does bring up a good point in terms of James’ basketball fit with the Sixers, and didn’t seem too inclined to speculate further.
Once James decides to opt in or out of his contract, there will be pertinent articles worth writing. Once he picks a team, there will be even more meaningful articles worth writing.
But until then, it’s all just conjecture. And thus wholly unnecessary.
