Cop Saves Man Trapped in Burning Car. Heart-Pounding Rescue Captured on Body Cam

Share

Cops are often portrayed as the bad guys. No one likes to get pulled over for a traffic violation, and Hollywood tends to portray a plethora of “good cop, bad cop” scenarios.

But the real-life men and women in police departments across the country are out there saving lives every single day.

They go unnoticed, good deeds unseen. While the media love to hype up any event in which an officer falls short, they tend to miss the hundreds of incidences in which an officer rose above the call of duty.

A body cam on a City of Atlanta Police Department officer showed just how dangerous a cop’s life can be.

Bravery and selflessness were in full force on Sunday, August 5, when a car accident caused a vehicle to go up into flames.

It is unknown at this time what initially caused the wreck, but we do know it’s thanks to the teamwork of two City of Atlanta officers that a man’s life was saved.

The time was 4 a.m. A car had run into a metal utility pole on Lenox Road near State Route 400, Fox News reported.

Watch as 27-year-old Officer Charles Tierney uses a fire extinguisher to try and douse some of the flames. He then attempts to pry the back passenger-side door open in order to save the man trapped inside.

Officer Tierney then goes around to the other side of the vehicle where a fellow officer, 25-year-old Brittany Williams, can be heard yelling, “Pull him out! Pull him out! Pull him out!”

According to ABC News, Tierney “hasn’t even graduated from the police academy” yet. Together, these young officers have become true heroes.

Williams told ABC News that she kept trying to pull the man in the vehicle — a man much larger and heavier than she — from the front seat and up and over the back seat.

“Your leg is about to catch on fire,” she told the man. “You need to pull it together and just give me whatever you have left.”

It took everything Williams and Tierney had to help the man before he was engulfed in flames. “This was teamwork,” Tierney shared with ABC News. “It wasn’t a single person’s effort.”

The officers shared an emotional and celebratory hug following the rescue. Three people were hospitalized following the fire and taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, Fox News reported.

A statement was also released by the Atlanta City Police Department: “We are extremely proud of the actions of these officers … We are also thankful for the actions of the citizens who stopped and assisted immediately after the accident.”

Clearly this rescue was due to valiant efforts on all sides. We need more heroes like these officers and the citizens who helped them. I know I’d want them around if anything like this ever happened to me.
