Cops Recover Stolen Van Filled with Doughnuts, Decide To Share Them with Homeless
Cop and doughnut jokes are a dime a dozen. Any time a police officer has something to do with a doughnut, there are a box-load of puns that inevitably follow.
Interestingly enough, an article from Time explained how the stereotype began. According to the news outlet, it really boils down to an officer’s work schedule.
Time published a remark from Norm Stamper, former chief of the Seattle Police Department, which shed some light on the topic.

No no it’s a trap don’t fall for it!! #cops #donuts #copsanddoughnuts #evilclown #funny
In “The Donut: History, Recipes, and Lore from Boston to Berlin” by Michael Krondl, Stamper explained, “Graveyard cops in the forties and fifties had few choices. They could pack lunch, pray for an all-night diner on their route or fill up on doughnuts.”
Makes sense, right? Now that we understand a little more about the history behind cops and their relation to the sugary breakfast treat, this next story will be even sweeter.
The Clearwater Police Department in Florida showed off a photo on their Facebook page that, on first glance, doesn’t look like anything special.
The photo shows several officers standing in front of a Krispy Kreme van, holding up boxes and bags of everyone’s favorite glazed doughnuts.
But a closer look at the photo’s caption reveals this was no ordinary breakfast run for the CPD. Apparently, the van had been stolen and the officers were fortunately able to track it down.
“A Krispy Kreme Doughnuts delivery van was stolen this morning from Lake City, Fla.,” the post said. “It was recovered this afternoon at Crest Lake Park in Clearwater.”
The caption went on to explain that the manager of the Krispy Kreme donated the donuts to the officers, who unsurprisingly kept a few doughnuts for themselves.
But the bigger story isn’t what these cops had for breakfast, it’s what they did with the majority of the doughnuts that has our hearts melting like a warm Krispy Kreme doughnut in your mouth.
“The officers saved a few donuts to enjoy later and donated the rest to the homeless feeding that takes place adjacent to the police station each night,” the post continued.
Now that’s what I call community service at its finest. It’s always a good thing when a crime can be turned upside down and used to do something good.
While we don’t condone stealing a van full of doughnuts — or anything, for that matter — we’re glad the store manager along with the CPD could use this incident to help others in need.
