Country Singer Jo Dee Messina Says She Was Visited by Jesus During Cancer Battle

Share

Every testimony of coming to faith is different. Some are simple yet so profound. Others move us to tears or remind us of the mysterious ways in which God works.

Country star Jo Dee Messina’s story of finding Jesus is one of faith and falling apart and getting back up again even in the most trying times.

In 2017, Messina’s team announced on her Facebook page that the singer had been diagnosed with cancer.

“It has been a trying summer,” the post read, “but her heart has been filled with gratitude for the many opportunities she has had to see God’s hand at work.”

Messina’s cancer wasn’t the only thing the 48-year-old had to fight against. Other struggles included divorce, raising her two sons on her own and financial burdens due to her illness and not being able to tour.

“If you’ve walked my life in the last five years, it has not been a typical life,” Messina told PopCulture.com.

“Not a lot of it goes out in press, which is great, because a lot of it’s painful, and a lot of it’s hurtful, and a lot of it’s scary.”

But through all of the hurt and the fear, Messina has continued to turn to one place.

“I’m leaning on God,” she told People in a 2018 interview. “I’m letting Him take charge. It’s what’s best for my soul right now. Every biopsy and every result… it feels like an eternity goes by. I know that God has me. I’m filled with gratitude and joy.”

But it wasn’t until one particular encounter on her front porch that Messina says she began to understand exactly what that joy was — and where true joy came from.

The star told PopCulture.com about the day she came to know her savior in a personal way like never before.

“About five years ago, Jesus Christ walked onto my front porch and argued with me all day long,” she said. “As real as I’m sitting in this seat, Jesus came to my front porch and he’s like, ‘She’s mine.’”

She went on to explain that she “was at an all-time low.” After her encounter, Messina talked to her neighbor and expressed she wanted to learn more about Jesus.

“I know the stories. I know the Christmas and Easter. He was born on Christmas, died on Easter,” she said. “You know what I mean? But I didn’t know him. Just having that intimate relationship with God, and I’ll sit here right in front of you and tell you he loves you more than you ever even imagine.”

The mom and cancer fighter often shares her faith through social media posts.

“Remember the One who loves you most of all,” she wrote on Instagram on Valentine’s Day, sharing the lyrics from “Reckless Love.”

The praise and worship song made popular by Bethel Music is one Messina has recorded and now sings at her shows.

“This song took the wind out of me,” she told People. “It resonates with my soul and my spirit, especially considering as many mistakes I have made.”
