Cowboys Reward Indefinitely Suspended Player with Bizarre Extension - Report
The Dallas Cowboys reportedly have agreed to a contract extension with a player who is currently suspended with no timetable for his return.
According to ESPN, the Cowboys gave an extension to defensive end Randy Gregory, who is serving a suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy as well as the terms of his previous reinstatement.
The suspension is indefinite, which makes the extension even more bizarre.

The dilemma for Dallas is that Gregory’s contract is up at the end of the 2019 season when he becomes a restricted free agent.
ESPN reported that the Cowboys agreed to pay him $735,000 in 2020 — if he is eligible to play.
“Obviously, what Randy is doing is a private and personal matter,” Daniel Moskowitz, Gregory’s attorney, said in a statement, according to ESPN. “I can say Mr. Gregory is a walking example (and proving) the age old saying that nothing in the world can take the place of persistence.
“This simple yet profound phrase ‘press on’ carries him as he does what he must do for himself, his daughter, family and the Dallas Cowboys. He is grateful for the unyielding support of the Jones family and Dallas Cowboys organization.”
Gregory, 26, was a second-round pick by the Cowboys in 2015 out of Nebraska after he failed a drug test for marijuana during the NFL scouting combine.
He missed all but two games in 2016 and the entire 2017 season serving out a series of suspensions for violating substance abuse policies.
Gregory played in 14 games last year and was productive, recording six sacks — second highest on the team — along with 25 tackles and 15 quarterback hits.
But he was suspended again after the 2018 season.
During this year’s NFL combine, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones didn’t rule out the possibility of Gregory playing in 2019, reported ESPN.

But as insurance, the Cowboys traded for Miami Dolphins defensive end Robert Quinn last week. They sent a 2020 sixth-round pick to Miami.
Quinn started 16 games for the Dolphins last year and had 6.5 sacks, 38 tackles and 15 quarterback hits. He has 69 career sacks.
