Crossing Guard Touches Hearts of Town After Making Gloves for the Kids Walking to School
As the winter temperatures drop, the care of one crossing guard is heating up.
Patty Polley is a crossing guard in Babson Park, Florida, according to WFTS-TV. While it is obvious that she loves her job, the families within the community also appreciate the kindness she shares with their children each day.
Recently, Polley began to worry about the little ones she kept safe on a daily basis. The weather in Florida was getting colder, and she wanted to make sure the kids of Dale R. Fair Babson Park Elementary stayed warm.
When she noticed that some of the kids were not dressed for the colder weather, she began knitting mittens for the children who walk to school.
Polley’s sister in Maine got in on the action as well and started sending gloves for the children to wear.
This generous act of kindness has turned Polley into one of the most loved and recognized crossing guards in her community. This is the second year in the row that she gave out handmade mittens to her grade school students.
The families were certainly appreciative of the simple gesture and reached out to Polley’s bosses at the Polk County Sheriff’s Office to express their gratitude.
The Sheriff’s Office responded with amazing praise for Polley on social media.
They wrote in a Facebook post, “When we asked our crossing guard supervisors, ‘Which one is Ms. Patty?’ and showed them the post, they said, ‘We had no idea – but then again, many of our crossing guards give gloves and gifts to their children.'”
“Unsung heroes indeed. Our cups runneth over.”
Even the residents of Babson Park showed their love for the crossing guard by showering her with gifts. She has truly become a local celebrity.
“It’s been amazing, it really has,” Polley said. “Believe me, those kids give me more than I could ever give them.”
While Polley took the crossing guard job merely to earn some extra money, what she has gained from the children she keeps safe is invaluable.
“I fell in love with all my little human beings,” Polley told WFTS-TV. “It’s not even a job. It’s somewhere I love to go. I actually miss them in the summer.”
