Cubs star Anthony Rizzo sends message to his alma mater rocked by shooting
Unfortunately, it’s a story that keeps happening far too often.
On Wednesday, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, was the latest site of a mass shooting.
A former student opened fire, killing 17 people.
Incredibly, this was the 18th school shooting already this year — and it’s only mid February.
Think about that.
Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo doesn’t have a choice.
Marjory Stoneman is his alma mater, and close to his heart.
As hard as Wednesday hit people across the country, for Rizzo, the grief is indescribable.
The World Series champion tried to put his feelings into words on Twitter.
Parkland and Coral Springs please stay strong! This is out of control and and our country is in desperate need for change. I hope In this darkest of times back home this brings everyone together and we can find love. You’re all in my prayers 🙏🏻🙏🏻

This isn’t just an athlete sending off best wishes. Rizzo won the Roberto Clemente Award last season, for his character, community involvement and contributions on and off the field.
Rizzo has remained very involved in the school. Last month, the all-star donated $150,000 to be used for new lights at the school’s baseball stadium, which is being renamed Anthony Rizzo Field.
A cancer survivor, Rizzo has been a champion of fighting the disease in children. Last year, his foundation donated $3.5 million to Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago to fund programs for patients and families dealing with cancer.
In other words, this is a good guy.
He doesn’t give back to the community because it’s good publicity, he does it because he cares.
Sports, and our country in general, needs more people like this.
