Custodian Gives Gloves Off Own Hands After Seeing Student Using Socks To Keep Warm

Share

‘Tis the season of giving. Random acts of kindness seem to double and triple in the year’s latter months as kind souls spread cheer and joy those around them.

One man from Janesville, Wisconsin, is setting a fine example for his fellow man as well as for the students who look up to him.

According to a Facebook post by the School District of Janesville, WI, the head custodian of Lincoln Elementary School has shown everyone what it means to warm someone’s heart — and hands.

Melvin Crawford was just doing what he thought was right when a parent spotted him interacting with a student.

“Sometimes it’s the little things,” the district’s Facebook post reads. “Yesterday morning, Lincoln Elementary School head custodian Melvin Crawford noticed a student walking across the school grounds with socks on their hands to keep warm.”

Have you done something to help someone else this holiday season?

The post goes on to share how Crawford didn’t think twice about sacrificing his own pair of gloves for the cold student.

“This kind of generosity is not in short supply at our Janesville schools,” the post says. “Thank you, Melvin!”

The photo shared shows Crawford receiving a “Promise Keeper” pin from superintendent Steve Pophal. According to the district’s website, five promises were adopted by its schools in 2017.

The “Janesville Promises” focus on student success, relationships, culture, climate, finance, health and safety. Crawford has clearly gone above and beyond to uphold the “relationships” promise the district strives to encourage.

This promise involves “Efficient, effective, and caring interactions with our students, parents, and community.”

Crawford’s act of kindness toward this student has received quite a bit of praise in the comments on Facebook. “My Daughter loves Mr. Melvin! Says ‘hi’ to him every morning,” one parent wrote.

“He didn’t ask someone else to help. Or form a committee to look into it. Or shrug and walk away. He. Simply. Gave,” another noted.

Another added, “God bless you Melvin. YOU are a good man.” A good man, indeed. Well done, Mr. Crawford!

As the weather continues to cool, if you have the means, consider donating some inexpensive gloves or mittens to your local schools. Just like this custodian, you can make a difference one child at a time.
